You can expect to find red morwong, luderick, bream, and groper moving through the water, along with wobbegong sharks and Port Jackson sharks resting on the bottom. Lobsters, crabs, sea urchins, and starfish are also common. Watch your footing around urchins, and be aware that rip currents and surge can develop, so check conditions before entering.

Tomakin Cove is a sheltered shore entry site suited to beginners, offering shallow, calm waters with mild current and variable visibility. The mix of reef and seagrass beds creates a habitat worth exploring slowly. Keep your eyes on the sandy patches between the seagrass where stingarees (small, bottom-dwelling rays) rest, and look carefully along the reef for weedy sea dragons, which are masters of camouflage. Eagle rays, mullet, garfish, whiting, and baitfish move through regularly. Because stingarees can be hard to spot on the bottom, shuffle your feet rather than stepping when wading.
