Imagine a living splash of vibrant colour flitting amongst the coral – that's a Rock Beauty! These stunning members of the angelfish family add a serious dose of 'wow' to any reef encounter. While not as commonly sighted as some other reef fish (they haven't been reported at many dive sites!), spotting one is a real treat. Typically encountered in the Eastern Pacific and North Atlantic, Rock Beauties patrol reefs at depths ranging from shallow snorkeling spots to deeper dive sites, making them accessible to a wide range of underwater explorers. Keep an eye out for them picking at algae and small invertebrates – they're always on the hunt for a tasty snack!
The Rock Beauty's striking colouration is its most defining feature. Adults are easily recognized by their black rear half, bright yellow front, and a vibrant orange patch in the center. Juveniles are almost entirely yellow with a small black spot that expands as they mature. Their oval, laterally compressed body shape is typical of angelfish. Keep an eye out for their graceful, flowing movements as they navigate the reef.
