Leatherjackets, belonging to the Monacanthidae family, are fascinating fish often encountered by divers and snorkellers in tropical and temperate waters. These quirky characters, typically around 30cm in length, add a touch of personality to reefs and rocky outcrops from shallow depths down to 50m. Their unique body shapes and often vibrant colours make them a memorable sighting. While not always the most flamboyant fish, Leatherjackets possess a subtle charm that rewards the observant diver. Keep an eye out for them grazing on algae or darting amongst coral formations. Spotting one is always a treat!
Leatherjackets are easily recognized by their diamond-shaped bodies, often with a prominent dorsal spine that can be raised or lowered. Their small mouths are perfectly adapted for picking at algae and invertebrates. Colouration varies greatly between species, ranging from drab browns and greens to vibrant blues, yellows, and oranges. Many have intricate patterns of spots, lines, or blotches. Their swimming style is also distinctive, often using their dorsal and anal fins for propulsion, giving them a somewhat jerky movement.
