Prepare to be charmed by the Striped Red Mullet, a vibrant flash of colour often seen flitting across the seabed! These elegant fish are a delight for divers and snorkellers lucky enough to spot them. Typically around 28cm long, but occasionally growing larger, they add a splash of crimson to the underwater landscape. While they can be found at impressive depths, you're most likely to encounter them in shallower coastal waters, particularly in the North Atlantic. Keep an eye out near rocky reefs and sandy bottoms, where they forage for tasty morsels. Their active, almost playful behaviour and striking appearance make them a memorable sight on any dive.
The Striped Red Mullet is easily identified by its vibrant reddish-pink body, punctuated by distinct horizontal yellow stripes running along its flanks. Look for the pair of long, sensitive barbels (whiskers) under its chin, which it uses to probe the seabed for food. Its elongated body shape and slightly forked tail further distinguish it. Unlike some similar species, the Striped Red Mullet's stripes are usually quite clear and unbroken.
