The Harlequin Bass, a jewel of the reef, is a relatively small but strikingly patterned fish that can add a splash of colour to any dive or snorkel. Typically around 20cm but growing up to 29cm, these reef-associated carnivores are most often seen in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, gracefully navigating depths from the surface down to 40 meters. While not the most frequently sighted fish, spotting a Harlequin Bass is a treat. Keep an eye out near coral formations and rocky outcrops as you explore the reef. Their vibrant colours and unique markings make them a photographer's delight. Despite their beauty, Harlequin Bass are still relatively unknown to divers.
The Harlequin Bass is easily identified by its distinctive colouration. Look for an elongated body with a base colour ranging from creamy white to pale yellow, overlaid with irregular, dark brown to black blotches and bars. A prominent dark stripe often runs along the lateral line. The fins are typically yellowish, and the overall pattern resembles a harlequin costume, hence the name. The fish has a slightly pointed snout and a generally slender build.
