Prepare to be mesmerized by the Fire Dartfish (Nemateleotris magnifica), a tiny jewel of the reef! This slender fish, typically around 6cm but occasionally reaching 9cm, is a favourite among underwater photographers for its striking colours and graceful movements. Imagine hovering near a vibrant coral garden, and spotting a miniature rocket with fiery red to orange hues fading into a vibrant yellow tail. These little guys are most frequently seen throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Japan & Korea, and even the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkellers might glimpse them in shallow, sun-drenched lagoons, while scuba divers can find them down to depths of 70m, always close to shelter.
The Fire Dartfish is easily recognized by its elongated, slender body and vibrant colouration. The front of the fish is a brilliant red to orange, gradually fading into a bright yellow tail. Its most distinctive feature is the dramatically elongated first dorsal fin ray, which it often holds erect, resembling a delicate antenna. They are small, typically 6-9cm, and tend to hover motionless above the reef, darting into crevices when threatened.
