The Zebra Lionfish is easily recognizable by its alternating dark reddish-brown and white vertical stripes that cover its body. It has prominent, fan-like pectoral fins with zebra-like markings and long, slender dorsal spines that resemble a feathery mane. Its smaller size, typically around 17cm, distinguishes it from the Common Lionfish. Look for its deliberate, almost regal movements as it navigates the reef.
Scorpaenidae
Imagine hovering over a vibrant coral reef and spotting a miniature, striped dragon gracefully gliding through the water – that's the Zebra Lionfish! This striking member of the scorpionfish family is a favourite among divers and snorkellers for its unique appearance and intriguing behaviour. While not as flamboyant as its cousin, the Common Lionfish, the Zebra Lionfish boasts a more subtle elegance. You'll typically find them nestled amongst rocks and corals, often in shallower waters, though they can venture down to impressive depths. Keep your eyes peeled in Southeast Asia, around Japan and Korea, parts of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef, and throughout the Indian Ocean, as these are their prime haunts. Remember to admire from a distance, as those beautiful spines pack a venomous punch!
