Seals! Who doesn't love a seal encounter? These playful pinnipeds are a highlight for many divers and snorkellers. Belonging to the Otariidae family, these marine mammals typically reach around 200cm in length and can be spotted in waters up to 50m deep, though they're often closer to the surface. Encounters are common at approximately 100 dive sites, making them a relatively reliable sighting. Seals are known for their engaging personalities and curious nature, often approaching divers for a closer look. Their sleek bodies and powerful flippers make them graceful swimmers, and witnessing their underwater acrobatics is a truly special experience.
Look for a streamlined body, typically dark brown or grey, with prominent whiskers. Their large, expressive eyes are another key feature. Unlike true seals, they possess visible ear flaps, which are a distinguishing characteristic of the Otariidae family, also known as eared seals. Their playful and inquisitive behaviour is often a giveaway; they are often seen swimming in circles or mimicking divers' movements.
